FAQ
About TreeBay
What is TreeBay?
TreeBay is a UK marketplace for tree surgeons, arborists and forestry workers. You can buy and sell kit and machinery, advertise jobs, list training courses, land, hire and timber, offer your work or your machine by the day, search a directory of places that take chip and logs, and tell the trade you're available for work in the forum.
Who can use TreeBay?
Anyone in the UK aged 18 or over: tree surgeons, arborists, forestry contractors, training providers, landowners, and anyone buying kit. TreeBay is for UK buyers and sellers only.
How is it different from Facebook groups or general marketplaces?
Everything on TreeBay is for tree work, and each kind of listing has the details that matter: make, model, year, hours and condition for machinery; pay and its period for jobs; dates and accreditation for courses. Listings stay searchable by keyword, category, price and location instead of sinking down a feed, and TreeBay takes no commission when something sells.
Buying
How does buying work?
Find something with search or the categories, then message the seller through TreeBay to ask questions, arrange a viewing or agree a price. You don't need to share your phone number or email to ask. TreeBay isn't part of the sale: you pay the seller directly and sort out collection or delivery between you. Buying used machinery? Our used chipper buying guide covers what to check before you hand over any money.
What do the watchlist and view numbers on a listing mean?
"On 3 watchlists" means 3 members have saved that listing to their watchlist. The view number counts each person once a day. Views don't include the seller or automated visits, and they started on 9 October 2026.
Does TreeBay take payment for items or offer buyer protection?
No. The only payments TreeBay takes are listing fees and Featured upgrades. Payment for the item goes straight between you and the seller, so TreeBay can't refund it or step in if a sale goes wrong. See kit working before you pay, and be wary of anyone who wants money up front or asks you to move the conversation off TreeBay.
Selling
How do I post a listing?
Sign in, tap List, pick a category and fill in the details. Machinery listings ask for make, model, year, hours and condition. A free listing goes live straight away; if a fee is due, the listing goes live as soon as you've paid. Our guide to selling used kit safely has pricing tips and the warning signs of a problem buyer.
What can I list?
There are eight categories: Machines, Plant, Kit & Workwear; Vehicles & Tractors; Subcontracting & Day Rates; Jobs & Careers; Training & Courses; Land & Commercial Property; Leasing & Long Term Rentals; Logs, Timber & Firewood. That covers machinery, plant, saws, climbing kit and PPE; 4x4s, pickups, vans, trucks, tractors and trailers; job adverts; courses; woodland, yards and units; long-term hire of machinery and vehicles; climbers, groundworkers and machines by the day; and logs, timber, woodchip and firewood. If you're self-employed and looking for day-rate work, list yourself in Subcontracting, or post that you're available, free, in the forum's Jobs category.
Does the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) apply to tree work?
Sometimes. HMRC counts tree felling as construction work when it's site clearance for a construction job, and a machine hired with its operator for use on a construction site counts too. Tree felling and tree surgery for forestry or estate management aren't covered. When CIS applies, a contractor paying a subcontractor must take 20% from their payments if they're registered for CIS and can be verified, or 30% if not, unless they have gross payment status. The deductions count towards the subcontractor's tax and National Insurance. Firms that pay subcontractors for construction work must register with HMRC as CIS contractors. If you're VAT-registered, the VAT domestic reverse charge may apply as well. This is general information from HMRC's guidance, not tax advice: see GOV.UK, "What you must do as a CIS subcontractor".
Can training providers list courses?
Yes. List a course under Training & Courses with the provider, dates, accreditation and whether it runs online. The fee is based on the course price, so a course under £1,000 is free to list.
How do I mark something as sold, change it or take it down?
Open your dashboard. From there you can edit a listing, mark it as sold or delete it. A sold listing leaves search straight away. If it's kit or machinery, a vehicle, timber or firewood, or property for sale, its page stays up for 30 days with a Sold banner, without your contact details, and it can appear under "Recently sold" for the first 14 days, unless you hide it sooner from your dashboard.
Pricing
What does it cost to list?
Listings priced under £1,000 are free, and so is your first listing at £1,000 or more. Above that there's a one-off fee based on the asking price: £4.99 from £1,000, £9.99 from £5,000, £19.99 from £10,000, £29.99 from £20,000 and £39.99 from £50,000. For hire and timber, that's the rate or unit price you enter. Job adverts come in plans from £50, and your first one is free. TreeBay takes no commission when something sells. See pricing
What does a job advert cost?
Every job advert runs 60 days. Three plans: Standard £50, Plus £75 and Premium £100, each a one-off payment. Your first job advert is free on Standard. Plus adds Featured placement; Premium adds a place above other adverts.
What does Featured do?
Featured costs £4.99 per listing. A Featured listing is shown above standard listings in search results and category pages, with a Featured label on its card, and the newest Featured listings also appear first on the homepage. It stays Featured for as long as the listing stays live. You can upgrade any live listing from your dashboard, including free ones.
Can I get a refund on a fee?
If you're selling or posting as a private individual, you can cancel within 14 days of paying and we refund the fee less a share for the days it was live. Fees paid by a business, including job adverts, aren't refundable once live. If a fault on our side stops a listing going live, or you pay twice by mistake, we refund that payment in full. Email hello@treebay.uk with the listing or tip-site name. Money paid to a seller for an item is between you and the seller. The refund policy has the details and a cancellation form.
Tip sites
What is the tip-site directory?
A directory of farms, yards and land where tree surgeons can tip chip or logs, with what each site accepts. Searching it is free for everyone. Find a tip site
What does it cost to register my tip site?
The first 500 sites list free for 12 months, and we don't ask for card details. After that, and for site 501 onwards, it's £19.99 a year, paid up front. Nothing renews automatically: at least 30 days before your year ends we'll email you the price of the next one, and nothing is charged unless you choose to pay. Change or remove your site at any time in Dashboard → Tip sites. Register a tip site
Account and safety
How do I sign in?
Use your Google account, or enter your email address and we'll send you a sign-in email. Tap the button in it, then tap Sign in on the page that opens. There's no password to remember. If the email hasn't arrived after a few minutes, check your spam or junk folder.
How do I stay safe buying and selling?
See kit working before you pay, check serial numbers and paperwork, never send a deposit for something you haven't seen, and don't hand anything over until the money has cleared. Our Staying safe page has checks for each category and what to do if something goes wrong.
How do I report a scam or a dodgy listing?
Tap Report this listing under “Staying safe” on the listing, or email safety@treebay.uk with the link. Never pay for kit you haven't seen.
Joined, replies and confirmed deals: how they work
- Joined TreeBay
- The date the account was created.
- Usually replies within…
- How quickly this member first replied to people who messaged them, over their last 30 conversations in the past 12 months. Messages they never answered count too. We use the times of messages, never what they say. We show it once at least 3 people have messaged them, and only if it's within a few days.
- Marked sold
- Listings the seller has marked as sold. It's their own record: we don't see the sale.
- Deals confirmed by both members
- When a seller marks a listing sold, they can pick the member they did the deal with from the people who messaged them about it. That member has 14 days to confirm it. We count a deal only when both have confirmed it.
- We count deals from the last 2 years. Each pair of members counts once in any 30 days, and both accounts must have been on TreeBay for at least 7 days.
- We don't see the deal or record the price. A count shows that deals happened, not how they went.
- Lots of deals are never recorded on TreeBay, so no count doesn't mean anything is wrong.
- Marking or confirming a deal that didn't happen is against our rules. We remove deals that weren't real and may restrict the accounts involved.
